With the extra time I’ve acquired while doing busy work and saved from my previous commutes to and from school and work, I’ve begun to listen to get my feet wet in podcast listening. Spotify has become my platform of choice due to convenience, but more importantly I’m here today to introduce you to some of my favorite podcasters revolving around forensics and true crime.

5 Podcasts Worth a Listen

  1. Fruit Loops

  2. Dr. Death

  3. Female Criminals

  4. FBI Retired Case File Review with Jerri Williams

  5. DISGRACELAND

Fruit Loops

Fruitloops is a weekly podcast hosted by two female true crime enthusiasts named Wendy and Beth. Like most true crime podcasts, the two detail past cases and discuss the situations caused by them or that led up to them. But as a twist they focus exclusively on the lost and squashed stories of perpetrators of color, especially the one with people of color as victims.

"Because contrary to popular believe, not all serial killers are White!"

Dr. Death

Hosted by Laura Beil, Dr. Death follows the story of the murderous neurosurgeon Dr. Christopher Duntsch. As we all know, our time spent at the hospital and with our doctors is one of the several occasions where we are our most vulnerable. Trusting and believing that the practitioners and the system are there to provide aid; not harm. But not with Dr. Dunstch around. Laura walks us through how this one neurosurgeon charmed hospitals and families and left 33 patients turned victims in the wake of a spineless system.

The flaws exposed are mystifying and the overall question raised is "who -or - what - is the system meant to protect?"

Female Criminals

Female Criminals is a Parcast Network original podcast hosted by Vanessa Richardson. The show is done on a weekly basis and delves into the numerous cases where women aren't only the victims, but the criminals as well! Each episode examines the psychology, motivations, and histories of the corresponding cases with and attempt to answer how the felons attempted to beat the law.

Vanessa covers cases from across the US as well as delving into international ones ranging from murderous nurses and cheerleaders to the historical base of Mulan and the woman it inspired to take justice and honor into her own hands! It's quickly become one of my favorite podcast to listen too while working in the lab and I hope it intrigues you in a similar way!

FBI Retired case File Review with Jerri Williams

In this podcast, you get to go over some of the most intriguing and high profile cases with retired FBI agent Jerri Williams. I personally came across this after one of the hosts from Fruit Loops recommended it during their show with high reviews that I've come to agree with.

Aside from being a retired FBI agent, Jerri is also a crime fiction writer and now true crime podcaster that uses her storytelling to recount her 26 years in the field as a special agent. In the show, she tells her own exciting stories as well as engaging interviews with her fellow retired agents to share more stories and reflect on the FBI's portrayal in books, TV, and movies. You can visit her website and Spotify to get in on the fun and hear some of Jerri's own crime fiction recommendations!

DISGRACELAND

Disgraceland is certainly one of the more "crude" shows on the list due to the more graphic and raunchy nature of the stories. The podcast delves into musicians getting away with murder and behaving very badly. Disgraceland melds music history, true crime and transgressive fiction. However, certain scenes, characters and names are sometimes fictionalized for dramatic purposes.

The episodes typically range from 30-45 minutes. and as the host says, "These stories are too wild for that. Disgraceland is a bi-weekly adult storytelling podcast. Not “sit around the campfire” storytelling. More like “slightly buzzed guy at the end of the bar whose seen some shit” storytelling." So if you're in the mood for baffling tales told from the perspective of an "old friend" be sure to check it out!
